Dominating majestically the Semois valley, the Bouillon Castle is one of the oldest and best preserved remains of feudal architecture in Europe. With its origins dating back to the 8th century, this imposing fortress is an exceptional witness to European medieval history.
Its history is intimately linked to that of Godfrey of Bouillon, the famous leader of the first crusade, who left his mark on the place forever. Built on three rocky peaks, the castle extends over 340 meters in length and formed a defensive complex reputed to be "impregnable".

Godfrey of Bouillon : The Hero of the Crusades
Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1058-1100), Duke of Lower Lorraine, is best known for leading the first crusade and becoming the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Before his departure for the Holy Land, he sold the castle to the Prince-Bishop of Liège to finance his expedition, forever marking the history of the place. Refusing the title of King, he preferred the more modest one of "Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre". His legend endures through the centuries, making him one of the most emblematic figures of the European Middle Ages.
