Castle Secrets & Expert Advice

Godfrey of Bouillon : The Hero of the Crusades

Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1058-1100), Duke of Lower Lorraine, is best known for leading the first crusade and becoming the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Before his departure for the Holy Land, he sold the castle to the Prince-Bishop of Liège to finance his expedition, forever marking the history of the place. Refusing the title of King, he preferred the more modest one of "Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre". His legend endures through the centuries, making him one of the most emblematic figures of the European Middle Ages.

For an optimal experience at Bouillon Castle :

  1. Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the best light for photos

  • Arrow slits, murder holes and machicolations for active defense
  • Underground passages and secret passages allowing discreet movements

The fortress could house up to 200 soldiers and was reputed "impregnable" in its time.

After centuries of partial abandonment, the castle experienced a remarkable renaissance :

Magnificent canoe descent (17km), the service is very good, we wait little even at arrival thanks to the driver and his wife who willingly answer our questions and calls. In addition, the small cafe with terrace is very pleasant. The night at the campsite was perfect.
