🌍 Geography & Landscape

The Semois valley constitutes one of the most unique geographical spaces in Western Europe. Dohan is its living heart: a village that illustrates the perfect symbiosis between orographic constraints and centuries-old human occupation.

Dohan's identity rests on a geological structure dominated by the primary rocks of the Ardennes massif: schist and partially quartziferous sandstone. A rocky eminence dominates the Semois by about twenty meters, providing a natural foundation for the defensive and residential constructions that have shaped the village over the centuries.

The landscape is the result of a Quaternary uplift of the Ardennes, which forced the river to cut deeply, creating meanders of rare complexity — the Saurpire and the Dampirée — today classified as Walloon geomorphological heritage. This unique configuration extends towards Herbeumont and the famous Poupehan cliffs.

Studies reveal the existence of cutoff meanders and alluvial terraces (four identified levels) testifying to the tumultuous history of the Semois. This dynamic has had contemporary repercussions, such as the landslides on the N865 in 1986, rendering the road impassable for nearly 20 years.

⚔️ History & Duchy of Bouillon

Dohan cannot be understood independently of its historical belonging to the Duchy of Bouillon, a unique political entity that was one of the last fragments of feudal autonomy in Western Europe.

1456
Foundation of the Duchy of Bouillon
The seigneury belonging to the Principality of Liège is elevated to the rank of duchy. Dohan constitutes a strategic surveillance point on the Semois thanks to the Yvois ford.
1482 – 1559
House of La Marck
The Count of La Marck seizes the duchy. Constant tensions with the Bishopric of Liège, punctuated by the treaties of Tongeren (1484), Cambrai (1521), and Cateau-Cambrésis (1559).
1591
La Tour d'Auvergne Alliance
Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne marries Charlotte de La Marck. The duchy falls under French influence. In 1678: 47 villages and hamlets, 4 mayoralties (Paliseul, Jehonville, Fays, Sensenruth).
1794 – 1795
Republic of Bouillon & French Annexation
Brief Republic of Bouillon from April to October 1794, witnessing the desire for local autonomy. Annexation by revolutionary France in 1795 (Forests Department).
1815
Congress of Vienna — Rohan Family
The ducal title is granted to the Rohans, heirs of Marie-Louise de La Tour d'Auvergne. The territory is integrated into the Kingdom of the Netherlands, then into Belgium in 1830.
September 1944
Liberation — Destruction of the bridges
The two bridges of Dohan are dynamited by the retreating German army. The local resistance (Maurice Body, René Rochet) was active in the surrounding forest massifs.

Dohan during the Belle Époque — Local archives

The village during the Occupation

In 1944, Dohan served as a hideout for Jews and draft evaders of compulsory labor, housed in cellars with thick schist walls. The explosion of the two bridges was so violent that it damaged the woodwork of all surrounding houses.

The memory of the fighters is maintained via the platform "La Guerre de nos Héros" which lists eleven articles specific to the village. Captain Lucien Chenot and Sergeant Félix Body are honored there for their bravery.

🏰 The Dohan Castle

The Dohan Castle is a listed monument that embodies the evolution of power structures in the Ardennes. Located on an eminence dominating the Semois by about twenty meters, it was initially established around 1619 by Florent de Lardenois de Ville.

Built in Ardennes schist and sandstone, the manor features an L-shaped dwelling situated in the east corner of a rectangular forecourt. Formerly surrounded by a moat and accessible by a drawbridge (mentioned in the 1877 inventories), the castle underwent a major transformation in the 18th century into a prestigious farm.

In 1760, the Duchesne de Ruville family acquired the property and carried out major works, notably the splendid heraldic pediment in yellow French stone which still dominates the road leading to the church.

Current owner: Mr. Jean-Etienne Hallet, a figure known for his commitment to safeguarding the banks of the Semois and the site of the Tombeau du Géant (Giant's Tomb).
⚠️ Access: The estate is private property. The view of the heraldic pediment is accessible from the public road.

🛡️ The Defensive Redoubts (1690–1697)

Between 1690 and 1697, a defensive line of redoubts was established along the Semois to protect the French borders. Dohan housed the Parfonru Redoubt, part of a network that also included the Libehan and Lauwez redoubts in Bouillon. These light fortifications testify to continuous military occupation of the valley in Modern Times and are currently subject to protection work by the National Park.

Tobacco Heritage

The sunny slopes and riverbank lands were ideal for Semois tobacco. The tobacco drying sheds — elongated buildings with louvered walls — are part of the small Walloon heritage that the National Park actively protects. This artisanal cultivation survives thanks to passionate individuals in Corbion and Alle.

Dohan during the Belle Époque

At the beginning of the 20th century, Dohan possessed a sawmill, a mill on the Semois, and the Hôtel Dufrêne welcoming the first automobile tourists. The Arnould family, owners of the farm-castle since 1798, anchors the history in a living intergenerational dimension.

🌿 Semois National Park

The creation of the Semois Valley National Park in 2022 marks a decisive step for the future of Dohan. The first Walloon national park, this status aims to protect the integrity of the landscapes while developing respectful and sustainable tourism.

The protection of the river is at the heart of the concerns. Memorandums of understanding have been put in place to improve water purification around the villages and combat bank erosion — notably downstream from the Dohan bridge.
