First time? No panic. Discover everything you need to know for a successful adventure.
Your first kayak trip on the Semois, stress-free
The Semois is one of the most accessible rivers in Europe for those starting out in a kayak. Shallow water, a steady current, and the fairy-tale landscapes of the Ardennes: everything is designed to turn your first trip into a memorable experience.
Every year, we introduce more than 4,000 beginners to the water. Most have never paddled before, and all of them, without exception, reach the end of their journey with a big smile. This guide brings together everything our instructors have been saying for 15 years: requirements, equipment, technique, safety, and the little tips that turn a good trip into a great one.

5 Golden Rules for a Successful First Time
Hold your paddle correctly
Your hands should be wider than your shoulders; the curved part of the blade faces backwards to 'bite' the water.
Look far ahead
Like in a car, the kayak goes where you look. Anticipate turns and obstacles 20 meters ahead.
Keep your distance
Leave 5 to 10 meters between kayaks, especially in currents or under bridges.
What to do if you capsize
Don't panic: the Semois is shallow. Hold the kayak, swim to the edge, and empty it.
Respect nature
You are crossing a Natura 2000 ecosystem. Don't throw anything in the water and only land in authorized areas.
Common Questions
Is it difficult?
Kayaking on the Semois is Class 1 (very easy). The river is calm, and the current helps you move forward without much effort. Perfect for families.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. For safety reasons, you must be able to swim at least 50 meters and not be afraid of getting your head underwater. Life jackets are provided and mandatory.
