The Salm : Geography & History
From its sources in the High Fens of the East Cantons to its confluence with the Amblève at Trois-Ponts, the Salm winds for nearly 28 km through one of the most wooded and confidential valleys in the Ardennes.
The Principality of Salm
The river gave its name to the town of Vielsalm and to the former Principality of Salm, a small sovereign state of the Holy Roman Empire whose counts and later princes ruled these forests from the Middle Ages until the Revolution. This history gives the valley a strong identity, between Ardennes traditions and the Germanic heritage of the East Cantons.
At Trois-Ponts, as the name suggests, three bridges span the Salm and the Amblève at their meeting point. This valley gateway, a stone's throw from the famous Coo waterfalls, is the natural finish of the Salm descents.
A mid-mountain river
Narrower and steeper than the great tourist axes, the Salm offers a strong current and a whitewater profile of class II to III depending on the level. Its pebbly bed, weirs and tight bends make it a technical and lively river, the opposite of the contemplative descents of the Meuse.
The flow depends directly on rainfall over the Ardennes plateau. The SPW Amblève station, downstream of the confluence, is a good indicator of the regime of the whole sub-basin.
The Brown Trout
The Salm's cool, lively and oxygen-rich water makes it a reference salmonid river. Brown trout and grayling thrive in its shaded pools — a marker of excellent water quality.
The Red Deer
The vast forests lining the Salm shelter one of the finest red deer populations in the Ardennes. From a silent kayak, at dawn or dusk, wildlife watching is a rare privilege.
State Forest
Spruce, beech and oak close their canopies above the river. The Salm is one of the most wooded descents in Wallonia: total immersion in the Ardennes forest, from start to finish.

Preparing Your Salm Descent
The Salm is more demanding than the family rivers. Good preparation guarantees a sporty, safe and memorable descent.
🎒 What to bring?
Synthetic clothing (quick-drying), closed shoes compulsory, windbreaker. Bring water (1.5L/person). All water equipment — kayak, life jacket, paddle — is provided by our partner operator.
💪 Required level
Good kayak control is required for the sporty routes (Grand-Halleux, Vielsalm). The Trois-Ponts discovery stretch remains accessible to accompanied beginners. Minimum 14 years recommended for class III.
🌊 Swimming ability
Being able to swim is mandatory on all routes with rapids. The life jacket is provided and compulsory; whitewater swimming ability remains essential on a river with such a strong current.
⚠️ Whitewater safety
If you capsize: stay on your back, feet downstream to cushion the rocks. Don't let go of your paddle, keep contact with the kayak and reach the bank or a calm pool.
🌿 Paddle responsibly on the Salm
Salmonid river and wild valley — let's preserve this rare natural heritage together.
Take everything back, even organic waste.
Avoid trout spawning zones (Oct-Dec).
Stay discreet: the valley shelters deer and nesting birds.
Land only on the zones marked by your guide.
When to kayak on the Salm?
As a small headwater river, the Salm reacts quickly to rainfall: its level can rise — or fall — fast.
🌸 Spring (Apr-May)
Strong flow and invigorating water. The prime period for thrill-seekers: well-fed rapids and dazzling vegetation.
☀️ Summer (Jun-Aug)
Lower level on the upper reaches; the lower routes remain navigable. Low crowds — the advantage of a confidential river. Weekend booking advised.
🍂 Autumn (Sep-Oct)
The flow rises again and the forest colours blaze. Wild and mysterious atmosphere in a near-deserted valley.
❄️ Winter (Nov-Mar)
Activity suspended during floods or frost. Unpredictable flow and cold — our partner operator is closed out of season.
