The Cross of BohanSentinel of the Ardennes "End of the World"

A legendary ascent in the heart of the Semois valley, spanning history, local legends, and dizzying panoramas.

Heritage and Natural Ecosystem

Bohan-sur-Semois, nestled in a tight meander, is nicknamed the "End of the World" of the Namur Ardennes. The Cross, peaking at 310 meters, watches over this village with its unique history.

🏔️Geomorphology & Climate

The layout of Bohan is the result of thousands of years of erosive work. The Semois river has carved into the Ardennes massif, creating steep slopes (gradients > 30%) that give the landscape its spectacular verticality. To reach the Cross from the riverbed (167m), you have to tackle a direct elevation gain of 143 meters over a very short distance.

The ascent takes on an almost pilgrim-like character, both physically and visually, offering a vertical reading of the landscape.

The microclimate of this sunny "basin", coupled with the river mists, has historically favored a unique flora and the cultivation of tobacco, which required heat and humidity for the drying process.

  • Village Altitude 167 m
  • Cross Altitude 310 m
  • Hike Peak 395 m
  • Area 14 km²

A Story of Resilience

🏰From Lords to Smugglers

The history of Bohan-sur-Semois dates back to the fiefdom of Baudoin d'Orchimont (1205). Before tourism, the village lived off domestic industry: the "Clauteûs" (nail makers) forged iron by hand.

Its border position also fueled a culture of smuggling. The steep paths, popular with hikers today (like the "Vallée des Baraques"), were once the secret routes of illicit trade with France.

🍂The Golden Age of Tobacco

Until 1951, the region devoted 575 hectares to tobacco. The drying sheds, with their slatted walls designed for ventilation, remain major architectural witnesses to this past prosperity.

🌉The Broken Bridge: An Iconic Ruin

The Pont Cassé (Broken Bridge) is inseparable from the panorama. A remnant of the old local tramway line (Lv524), it embodies the scars of war. Laboriously built, it was destroyed just a few years after its completion.

1913

Partial Opening

Start of the local railway line.

1935

Completion of the Bridge

Finished after numerous technical challenges.

May 11, 1940

Blown Up

Dynamited by the French army to slow the German advance.

1944

Final Destruction

By the retreating Germans. Never rebuilt.

  • The Viewpoint (310m): A plunging view over the meander and the route towards France.
  • Roche la Dame & La Cuve (342m): A ridge walk offering a broadened perspective of the vast forest massifs.

Bohan-Membre Nature Reserve

A biodiversity sanctuary of 177 hectares managed by Ardenne & Gaume, protecting rare ecosystems.

🌿 Remarkable Flora

Slope forests rich in diversity (oaks, hornbeams). Presence of the soft shield fern, a sign of constant humidity and humus-rich soil.

🦅 Black Stork

An emblematic and shy species. Its presence is an indicator of the high environmental quality and tranquility of the area.

🐦 Great Spotted Woodpecker

Uses the many dead trees left standing to nest, testifying to ecological forest management.

Legends & Folklore

🧚The Fairies' Table (La Table des Fées)

Located on the heights, this rocky pedestal is said to have served as a gathering place for the fairies chased away from the Hultai hill. Nearby, "The Chimney" (La Cheminée) evokes the Nutons, Ardennes earth spirits living in the depths of the rock.

🐻The Bear of Bohan

An 18th-century legend recalling the time when man cohabited with large predators. Today, it is celebrated with a local beer.

💍The Marriage Stone (La Pierre à Marier)

Located in the village, composed of two blocks (shale and quartz). Custom dictated that newlyweds had to sit there back-to-back. A symbol that married life requires rock-solid strength, just like the stone of the valley.

"A unique nuptial tradition in the heart of the Ardennes."

Magnificent canoe descent (17km), the service is very good, we wait little even at arrival thanks to the driver and his wife who willingly answer our questions and calls. In addition, the small cafe with terrace is very pleasant. The night at the campsite was perfect.
