The Obvious Choice: The Semois for Your Family Holidays

Why do all families choose the Semois Valley for their first kayaking experience? The answer lies in three words: Safety, Serenity, and Wilderness. Unlike the Ourthe or the Lesse, which can have bubbling sections or dense crowds, the Semois is a long, quiet river (class 1) that invites contemplation and total disconnection.

Imagine gliding on crystal-clear water, the kids at the front of the kayak, watching for trout shadows or the lightning-fast flight of the kingfisher. Here, no need to be an Olympic athlete. The river does part of the work for you, with a gentle but constant current that carries you without excessive effort. It's the perfect activity for beginners in Belgium who want to try the joys of navigation without stress.

Preserved Nature (Natura 2000 & National Park)

By choosing to navigate the Semois, you enter a sanctuary. In October 2022, the valley was officially recognized as the Semois Valley National Park. This distinction is not just a title; it guarantees the protection of a unique ecosystem. Along your descent, you will cross Natura 2000 zones where flora and fauna flourish without human hindrance. The carpets of water buttercups (those little floating white flowers) are a sign of exceptionally high water quality. For children, it's an incredible school of life where they learn respect for the environment while having fun.

Did you know?

The Semois is one of the rare Belgian rivers where you can still spot the black stork. More discreet than its white cousin, it nests in inaccessible cliffs and comes to feed in the calm waters of the river. Keep your binoculars handy!

Kayaking the Semois with children: from what age?

The Semois is the most reassuring river in Belgium for families: shallow depth (40 to 80 cm on average), a gentle class-1 current, more than 1,200 families a year setting off from Alle — for 0 serious accidents in 30 years. A child can come aboard from age 3.

From age 3 — Passenger

Sitting in the middle of a 3-seater canoe, between both parents, the child enjoys the ride effortlessly and safely.

From age 7 — Paddler

The child starts using a lightweight paddle suited to their size and takes an active part in the descent.

From age 12 — Independent

The child can steer their own single kayak under adult supervision.

The right route with children

The Alle → Vresse route (7 km, 1h30 to 2h) is the most recommended for families with young children: calm water, few weirs, wild scenery and arrival near a playground. Approved life jackets in every size (from child XS to XL), mandatory for all.

Preparing for Your Descent: The Serene Parent's Practical Guide

A successful kayak trip starts with a well-packed bag. Here are our local expert tips to ensure your day on the Semois is pure pleasure from start to finish.

The "Forget-Nothing" Checklist

Even though we provide waterproof buckets, here are the essentials to slip inside:

  • Sun Protection: Even if it's overcast, the water's reflection is tricky in the Ardennes. SPF 50 sunscreen for the kids.
  • Closed shoes: Old sneakers or sport sandals. Barefoot kayaking is forbidden (risk of cuts when disembarking).
  • Spare clothes: For the end of the day. Leave them in your car for more comfort.
  • Hydration: At least 1.5L of water per person. Kayaking makes you thirsty!
  • Snacks: Cereal bars, dried fruits, or a nice local picnic to enjoy on a pebble beach.

How to deal with the weather and water level?

Kayaking is a weather-dependent activity. While the Semois is navigable 95% of the time from April to October, episodes of severe drought or, conversely, intense rain can impact navigability. If the flow drops below 2.2 m³/s, navigation is prohibited to protect the aquatic environment. Conversely, above 50 m³/s, the current becomes too strong for families. We monitor this minute by minute.

Expert tip: If you are unsure, check our gauge at the top of the page. It is directly connected to the Walloon Region's beacons. No bad surprises upon arrival!

Ethics & Environment: Responsible Kayaking

The Semois is not just an amusement park; it's a living ecosystem. We ask our guests to respect a few simple rules: do not land on private banks, stay in the middle of the current to avoid fish spawning grounds, and bring back ALL your trash (we provide bins at the center). Together, let's keep the Ardennes wild and clean.

Everything You Need to Know (Kayak FAQ)

Which Semois kayak distance should a beginner choose?
For a first time, we definitely recommend the 7 km or 11 km. The 7 km takes about a solid hour if you paddle a bit; it's ideal to see if everyone (including kids) enjoys the vibe. The 11 km is more complete but remains very accessible.
Can we go kayaking with a dog?
Yes! Calm dogs are welcome in our two-seater kayaks. We simply ask that they are not tied to the boat for their safety in case of a capsize (very rare). Remember to bring a towel for them.
What if we fall in the water?
Don't panic! On 90% of the routes, the depth is about 1 meter or less. Your life jacket (mandatory) will keep you afloat. You just need to stand up, pull the kayak to the edge, empty it, and get back in. It's often the funniest story of the day!
Do I need to know how to swim to kayak on the Semois?
Even though wearing a life jacket is mandatory and ensures flotation, we recommend knowing how to swim, or at least not being afraid of the water, to fully enjoy the activity. For young children, the presence of an adult who knows how to swim in the same boat is essential.
How should I dress for kayaking today?
Check the temperature displayed at the top of the page. If it's over 20°C, shorts and a technical t-shirt are perfect. Below that, bring a light windbreaker or a long-sleeved synthetic t-shirt (cotton stays cold once wet).
Do I need to be athletic to descend the Semois?
Absolutely not. The force of the current does 60% of the work. You paddle mainly to steer the kayak. It's more of a contemplative stroll than a competitive workout.
From what age can a child kayak on the Semois?
From age 3 as a passenger in the middle of a 3-seater canoe, from age 7 to paddle with a suitable paddle, and from age 12 to steer a single kayak under adult supervision. The approved life jacket is mandatory for everyone, in every size (from about 10 kg).
How deep is the Semois for children?
On most routes, the Semois is very shallow: between 40 and 80 cm on average. Combined with a gentle current (class 1) and wide, flat-bottomed family canoes, it is one of the most reassuring rivers in Belgium for families with young children.
