🏞️ The Semois: an exceptional river

Nestled in the southern Ardennes massifs, the Semois is one of the most preserved and rich river ecosystems in Wallonia. Its 167 km course within the Semois Valley National Park (28,980 ha) makes it an internationally renowned fishing destination.

Classified as a 2nd category fishing zone, the river offers "mixed" waters ideal for the coexistence of salmonids and rheophilic cyprinids.

🌊 Hydromorphology of the sector

The riverbed of the Semois in Vresse-sur-Semois is characterized by an alternation of oxygenated riffles and deep pools, creating a mosaic of ideal habitats:

  • Spawning grounds in riffle zones (gravel, pebbles, Ardennes shale)
  • Thermal refuges in the pools (summer low water)
  • Beds of water crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis) in the meanders
  • Dense riparian forest that keeps the water below 22°C in summer

Hydromorphological Parameters of the Vresse-sur-Semois Sector

ℹ️ Water quality monitoring is jointly carried out by the Semois Valley National Park and the Semois-Chiers River Contract. Severe low water levels linked to climate change are the main risk factor for salmonid populations.
Summary table of key parameters — Source: Semois Valley National Park & Semois-Chiers River Contract
Parameter Characteristics (Vresse-sur-Semois) Fishing Implications
Fishing Category 2nd category (mixed waters) Coexistence of salmonids / rheophilic cyprinids. Versatility of techniques.
Flow facies Alternating riffles / deep pools Micro-habitats: oxygenated spawning grounds (riffles) and thermal refuges (pools)
Benthic substrate Pebbles, gravel, shale, and Ardennes sandstone Optimal support for spawning grounds and macro-invertebrate development
Thermal regime Marked seasonal amplitudes — vulnerability to summer low waters Shading riparian forest essential to keep water below the lethal threshold for salmonids (22–24°C)
Aquatic vegetation Dense Ranunculus aquatilis beds between Alle and Vresse Protected spawning grounds for cyprinids, refuge for fry, habitat for insect larvae
Water quality Good (dense forest = natural filter). Vulnerability to point-source pollution Favorable environment for salmonids. Continuous monitoring required.

Trout Species of the Semois

Brown Trout

Salmo trutta fario

A native and iconic species of the Semois. The brown trout is the Holy Grail for Ardennes anglers. Its coat, spotted with red and orange in a bluish halo, makes it easily recognizable.

It requires cool, highly oxygenated waters and diverse hydromorphology. An opportunistic predator, it feeds on aquatic insects, worms, small fish, and crustaceans.

🌡️ Optimum: 12–14°C 📏 Legal size: 25 cm 🗓️ Season: Mar → Sept 🎣 Technique: fly, lure

Rainbow Trout

Oncorhynchus mykiss
[Image of a Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)]

A non-native species of North American origin, introduced on certain stretches of the Semois for fishing purposes. It tolerates slightly higher temperatures than the brown trout and weaker currents.

Although popular for its spectacular fight at the end of the line, its introduction is strictly regulated to preserve native wild populations.

🌡️ Tolerance: up to 18°C 📏 Legal size: 25 cm 🎣 Fight: vigorous ⚠️ Specific stretches

Grayling & Other Salmonids

Thymallus thymallus & Salmo trutta trutta

The Semois also hosts bullheads (Cottus gobio), bio-indicators of water quality, minnows, and locally, migrating populations of sea trout. These species testify to the exceptional quality of the environment.

The 2024 National Park inventories recorded more than 1,758 species, including over 300 that are rare or threatened in Belgium.

🦦
European Otter
Lutra lutra — successfully reintroduced to the Semois. A sign of a healthy environment.
🐦
Kingfisher
Alcedo atthis — regular nester on the banks. A prime bio-indicator.
🦅
Black Stork
Ciconia nigra — rare species nesting in alluvial forests. Hunts from a standstill.
🦞
White-clawed Crayfish
Austropotamobius pallipes — protected species, demanding in terms of water quality.
🦋
Damselflies & Dragonflies
Indicators of a rich aquatic entomofauna, the food base for trout.

Water Crowfoot
Ranunculus aquatilis — key weed beds for spawning and fry.

Recommended Fishing Techniques on the Semois

🪶 Dry fly fishing

The premier technique on the Semois. Reading the current is essential to present the insect imitation naturally on feeding zones upstream of the riffles. Favored from March to June during mayfly hatches.

During the summer low water period, a stealthy approach and fine imitations (size 16–18) on shaded pools are recommended.

🔱 Lure fishing

Authorized in specific sectors. Light spinners (3–7g), small floating minnows, and soft lures worked with slow traction are effective in deep pools.

Lure fishing is particularly productive early in the season (March–April) when brown trout are aggressive and less selective after winter.

🪱 Live & natural bait fishing

Earthworm fishing remains a classic in colored waters after spring floods. Bunches of larvae (Perla) or tubifex worms are incredibly effective on gravelly bottoms.

It is subject to the same regulations as other techniques (daily quota, minimum catch size).

🌊 Nymph fishing

The ultimate bottom technique for targeting trout feeding below the surface. Using a strike indicator (float) combined with weighted nymphs imitating benthic invertebrate larvae is highly effective on the Semois.

Ideal in pools and slow-moving current lanes, particularly in summer.

🟦 The Blue Zone — Access to the Semois Riverbanks

In Vresse-sur-Semois, the influx of anglers and tourists on the riverbanks is managed through a regulated Blue Zone parking system. This setup allows direct, fair, and controlled access to the river while preserving the quality of the natural environment and the tranquility of the village.

The main parking lot accessible as a Blue Zone is located at Rue Léon Henrard, 5550 Vresse-sur-Semois. Additional spaces are available on the outskirts of the village, a few hundred meters from the banks.
