The Semois is not just a river; it is the lifeblood of the southern Ardennes. Choosing a kayak trip on the Semois means choosing a journey through time and through a landscape that has hardly changed over the centuries. From the impressive loops around Bouillon to the hidden valleys of Vresse-sur-Semois, every kilometer offers a new perspective on Belgian nature.
Our base in Alle-sur-Semois is strategically located to offer you the best experience. Why choose Kayak-Ardenne? Because we combine passion with technology. We are the only ones in the region to offer a real-time water level API, directly linked to the hydrographic services of the SPW. This means you can always go out on the water with peace of mind, knowing that the conditions are optimal for your safety and enjoyment.
Unlike the Lesse or the Ourthe, the Semois is known for its calm character. For families with young children (from 3 years old on short routes), this is the absolute number one choice. The water is shallow in most places, there are no dangerous rapids, and the surroundings are a living history book. Think of the Pont de Claies in Laforêt, a wattle bridge that is rebuilt every year by hand from willow branches – a unique piece of heritage that you can only truly admire from the water.
At Kayak-Ardenne, we offer a selection of routes that have been carefully designed to meet the desires of every adventurer, from the casual tourist to the experienced paddler. Each route starts from our bases in Alle-sur-Semois or Poupehan.
This is our most popular route, ideal for families with young children or for those looking for a short, relaxing introduction to kayaking. In about 1.5 to 2 hours, you glide along forested banks and under the historic bridge of Vresse. The water is calm here and the depth is limited, providing a safe feeling for the little ones. You end in the picturesque village of Vresse, known for its art galleries and cozy terraces.
Want to stay on the water a bit longer? The trip to Membre takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. After passing Vresse, you enter an even wilder part of the Semois. Here you experience the true silence of the Ardennes. Membre is a charming village where you can enjoy a local beer after your trip while waiting for our free shuttle bus to take you back to the starting point.
For the sporty recreant, the route to Bohan, near the French border, is the ultimate challenge. In 4 to 5 hours, you cross the heart of the Semois Valley National Park. You pass legendary places like the Pont de Claies (in season) and sail through deep valleys where nature is in charge. Bohan welcomes you with its impressive rock formations and rich tobacco history.
Starting from the legendary village of Poupehan (known for its political history), you sail downstream to our main base in Alle. This approximately 2 to 2.5-hour route offers beautiful panoramas of the Ardennes hills. It is a perfect 'intermediate route' for those who find 7 km too short but 17 km too long.
Combine the best of both worlds. This 4 to 5-hour tour takes you past Poupehan, Alle, and Vresse. It is an excellent way to see the variety in the landscape of the Semois: from the narrow valleys at Poupehan to the wider meadows around Alle.
The 'King of the Semois'. This route requires good physical condition and a full day on the water (5.5 to 7 hours). It is the ultimate way to experience the full splendor of the Semois all at once. You see the river transform and the silence deepen as you leave the inhabited world behind.
Since December 2022, the Semois Valley has been officially recognized as a National Park. This is a huge victory for nature and a guarantee for you as a visitor that you are entering a protected paradise. During your descent, you have a high chance of spotting the rare black stork or seeing traces of beavers along the banks. We ask all our visitors to treat this fragile ecosystem with respect: leave no waste behind and keep your distance from the fauna.
The history of the Semois Valley is inextricably linked to tobacco cultivation. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this was the main economic activity in the region. As you sail along the banks, you can still see the characteristic wooden tobacco drying sheds (séchoirs à tabac). These iconic structures with their adjustable wooden slats are silent witnesses to a rich past. Today, tobacco has largely been replaced by sustainable tourism, but the soul of the 'planters' lives on in the hospitality of the local population.
Our bases in Alle and Poupehan are located in the heart of this historical zone. Did you know that Poupehan played a crucial role in Belgian political history? It was here, in the tranquility of the Ardennes forests, that secret meetings took place that determined the course of the country. When you step into your kayak, you are literally stepping into a liquid history book.
As a visitor to the Semois Valley National Park, you get a unique glimpse into one of the best-preserved ecosystems in Belgium. The river is home to an enormous diversity of life. In the clear water, you can see schools of fish darting around, including trout and grayling. But the real stars are above the water.
While the white stork likes to live near people, the black stork is a symbol of wilderness. This shy bird nests deep in the Ardennes forests and comes to the Semois to fish. Spotting a black stork during your kayak trip is an unforgettable experience and proof of the excellent water quality and tranquility in the area.
Keep your eyes open for a flash of azure blue just above the water surface. The kingfisher is a permanent resident of the Semois banks. It digs its tunnels in the steep sand walls along the river. Its presence is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem with plenty of small fish.
For a long time they were gone, but the beaver is completely back. During your trip, you will undoubtedly see gnawed trees or beaver dams. These animals are crucial for biodiversity because they create small biotopes that benefit other species. There are even rumors that the extremely rare otter has found its way back to the Semois, a crowning achievement after years of nature restoration work.
The Semois is known for its spectacular meanders. Geologically speaking, the river is very old. Over millions of years, it has carved its way through the hard slate of the Ardennes plateau. This has resulted in deep, narrow valleys and dramatic rock formations. One of the most beautiful examples of this is the panorama of Frahan, which you can admire from your kayak from a unique, low perspective. The rock walls along the river are not only beautiful to see but also home to specific plant species that only grow on this lime-poor, acidic subsoil.
Although most people visit the Semois in the summer, each season has its own charm:
At Kayak-Ardenne, your safety is central. Our fleet consists of modern, stable single and double kayaks that are regularly checked. But safety starts with information. Our website is unique in the region thanks to the integration of live data.
Quentin Deligne, our local expert and developer of the platform, has created an algorithm that analyzes the flow and water level of the Semois in real-time. Why is this important? In dry summers, the water level may be too low for a good descent, while after heavy rain, the current may be too strong. We inform you proactively via our 'Live Stock' and 'Water Level' dashboards, so you never face surprises.
Although you can rent on-site, we strongly recommend online reservation, especially in high season and during sunny weekends. With an online reservation, you are guaranteed your kayaks and can go directly to check-in.
With us, you pay nothing extra for the shuttle. After you have handed in your kayaks at the end point, our bus picks you up and takes you safely back to your car in Alle or Poupehan. Our shuttles run at regular intervals.
Kayaking is an outdoor activity. In light rain, the descent continues as normal (a raincoat works wonders!). Only in extreme thunderstorms or dangerous high water will we cancel activities and you will receive a full refund or a voucher.
Yes, but keep in mind that access to the river is regulated in certain places by the Walloon government. Use of our private shuttles is reserved for customers who rent equipment from us.
Whether you come for the sporty challenge, the peace of nature, or a cozy day with the family, Kayak-Ardenne offers you the best conditions on the Semois. Our combination of years of experience, love for the region, and modern technology guarantees you an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes.
Don't wait any longer and discover why thousands of visitors choose the Semois every year. Book your descent today and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the river.
