Succeed on your first descent of the Semois
First time? Don't worry. Discover everything you need to know for a successful and relaxing adventure in the heart of the Ardennes.
Your first kayak descent, stress-free
The Semois is one of the most accessible rivers in Europe for beginners. Shallow water, steady current, and magical Ardennes scenery: everything is designed to turn a first outing into an unforgettable memory.
Every year we introduce more than 4,000 beginners to kayaking. The vast majority had never paddled before, and every single one of them arrived at the end of their route with a smile on their face. This guide brings together in one place what our instructors have been saying for 15 years.
The short answer to your doubts: yes, you can do it – and the 7 km Alle-Vresse route was designed with you in mind.
Everything a beginner needs to know
Is it difficult?
Absolutely not. The Semois is a "calm" river (class 1). The current carries you naturally. The 7 km route is flat, shallow and can be paddled without great effort in around 1h30.
Do you need to know how to swim?
Yes, it is mandatory. Although the water is shallow and a life jacket is provided, the law requires you to be able to swim at least 25 metres as a basic safety measure.
What is the minimum age?
We welcome children from 2–3 years old as passengers in the middle of a canoe or double kayak. To start paddling, 7 or 8 years old is ideal.
Practical tips
- Book in advance: especially at weekends for the shuttle.

5 Tips for perfect technique
Hold your paddle correctly
Your hands should be wider than your shoulders; the curved face of the blade faces backward to catch the water.
Look well ahead of you
Just like driving a car, the kayak goes where you look. Anticipate bends and obstacles 20 metres ahead.
Keep your distance
Leave 5 to 10 metres between kayaks, especially in currents or under bridges.
What to do if you capsize
Don't panic: the Semois is shallow (often less than one metre deep). Hold onto the kayak, swim to the bank, and empty it.
Respect nature
You are paddling through a Natura 2000 ecosystem. Don't throw anything into the water and only land at authorised areas.
The correct grip is the key to a fatigue-free descent.
How to dress for each season?
Spring
Cool water. Long-sleeved Lycra top, technical shorts, neoprene shoes and a light windproof jacket. Towel in the car.
Summer
Swimsuit, synthetic t-shirt, cap, sunglasses with a strap, SPF 50 sun cream. Water bottle is a must.
Autumn
Thermal base layer, long shorts, closed-toe shoes. Perfect for enjoying the magnificent colours of the valley.
⚠️ 3 absolute rules
- No cotton: It chills you instantly and takes too long to dry.
- Closed-toe shoes: Trainers or neoprene shoes. Flip-flops are forbidden (they sink).
- Empty your pockets: Phone and keys go in the waterproof barrel provided!
The 5 beginner pitfalls
Paddling too hard
The current does 80% of the work. Paddle calmly — 3 to 4 strokes, then pause to glide.
Paddle upside down
The hollow/concave face of the blade must face you to properly catch the water.
Grabbing branches
This is the number one cause of capsizing! Always push obstacles away with your paddle, never with your hands.
Forgetting sun cream
Water acts like a mirror. Without protection, sunburn is guaranteed, even on a cloudy day.
Setting off too late
Keep an eye on the last return shuttle time (often 6 pm). Set off before 3 pm to be safe.
What our beginners say
"I was terrified of water. The briefing reassured me, and after 10 minutes I was laughing in the kayak. The 7 km flew by!"
"Three kids, two parents, zero experience. We came back with stars in our eyes. The water is so calm."
"I thought you had to be sporty. Wrong. I'm 62, I did the 10 km in a double kayak without any difficulty. Stunning scenery."
