Membre-sur-SemoisHeritage, Nature & Activities in the heart of the National Park

An Ardennes village nestled in a spectacular meander of the Semois river, Membre offers total immersion: a nature reserve, the ephemeral Pont de Claies, an official swimming area, and legendary trails within the Semois Valley National Park.

Membre-sur-Semois: Portrait of an Exceptional Territory

A constituent entity of the municipality of Vresse-sur-Semois in the Province of Namur, Membre-sur-Semois embodies the success of a gentle rural transition, moving from a tobacco economy to nature tourism that respects its ecological integrity.

Within the Semois Valley National Park (28,980 hectares, 675 km of watercourses), Membre stands out for its unique meander, the richness of its 177-hectare nature reserve, and a built heritage that tells the story of centuries of resilience in the face of geographical isolation.

Geomorphological Setting and Environment

🌊The Membre-Bohan Meander: the "Jambon de la Semois"

The most prominent feature of the area is the cut-off meander, nicknamed the "Jambon de la Semois" (Ham of the Semois) due to its shape from the sky. The river forms a loop of nearly two kilometers only to progress a few hundred meters as the crow flies.

This configuration creates a central peninsula with steep slopes, preserving a dense forest cover and remarkable biodiversity. The iconic viewpoints arranged on the ridges (Jambon, Roche à Gillquin) offer educational panoramas revealing the staggered vegetation and fluvial dynamics.

🪨Geology and Legends: Rock Formations

🏔️ La Roche à la Dame

A rocky promontory offering a strategic viewpoint over the valley, the source of legends related to female and fairy figures.

🧚 La Table des Fées

A tabular formation evoking megalithic practices. Testifies to the ancient anthropization of the landscape by the collective imagination.

🕳️ Le Trou de l'Homme Sauvage

A rock shelter or small tectonic cave, recalling the function of dense forests as a refuge for outcasts throughout the ages.

Built Heritage and Landscape Archaeology

Saint-Fiacre Church (1888)

Built in 1888 in a neo-Gothic style, it replaces a castle chapel founded in 1588 by J.B. Du Bois de Fiennes. Its hidden treasure: an internationally renowned Westenfelder organ, attracting famous organists for concerts that transform the church into a living cultural venue.

🌉The Bridge of Membre and the Vicinal Tunnel

🪨 The Stone Bridge

Rebuilt after the destructions of the World Wars (1940), this bridge now delimits the official swimming area, moderating the current for leisure activities.

🚇 The Bohan-Membre Tunnel

A remnant of the local tramway line 553 ("the least profitable in Belgium"). Carved into the schist rock, this tunnel has become a popular walking destination, symbolizing the industrial ambition that tried to tame the Ardennes geography.

🍂 Tobacco Drying Sheds

Tall, narrow wooden sheds with movable planks for drying leaves. Many have been converted into cottages, but their silhouette remains a marker of the local rural heritage.

The Pont de Claies: A Masterpiece of Rural Ethnography

An ephemeral structure unique in Belgium, the Pont de Claies between Vresse and Laforêt (accessible via hike from Membre) is a living testimony to the vernacular genius of the Ardennes.

Made of woven hazelwood panels resting on pillars driven into the riverbed, it is assembled every year in June (low water) and dismantled in September-October before the floods.

Originally, this bridge was a working tool for the tobacco planters of Laforêt accessing the alluvial lands on the opposite bank. Today, its annual reconstruction is an act of preserving intangible heritage.

The experience: Crossing this bridge offers hikers a unique tactile and sonic immersion — the lapping of water underfoot, the flexibility of the hazelwood, the absence of rigid guardrails. It is a direct plunge into the valley's agricultural history.

Conclusion and Perspectives

Membre-sur-Semois embodies the success of a gentle rural transition. From an economy based on tobacco and subsistence farming, the village has managed to shift towards nature tourism that respects its ecological integrity.

The "things to discover" are not limited to a list of sites:

  • The experience of time — Crossing the Pont de Claies or waiting for the mist to lift over the Jambon are moments of pure contemplation.
  • The experience of space — Moving from the dark industrial tunnel of the vicinal tramway to the harsh light of the Sautou ridges offers striking sensory contrasts.
  • The experience of taste — Tasting a local smoked ham after a hike anchors the memory in the Ardennes terroir.
The future of Membre, within the National Park, is geared towards tourism that values silence, biodiversity, and authentic heritage — the promise of an inexhaustible discovery where every path and every stone has a story to tell.

Magnificent canoe descent (17km), the service is very good, we wait little even at arrival thanks to the driver and his wife who willingly answer our questions and calls. In addition, the small cafe with terrace is very pleasant. The night at the campsite was perfect.
