The Amblève: Geography & History
From its source in the High Fens to its confluence with the Ourthe at Comblain-au-Pont, the Amblève winds 88 km through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the province of Liège.
The Coo Waterfalls: an Ardennes symbol
With a drop of 15 metres, the Coo Waterfalls are Belgium's highest natural waterfall. Created in the 14th century by Benedictine monks to power a mill, they are now listed as part of Wallonia's natural heritage and attract over 200,000 visitors per year.
The village of Coo, part of the municipality of Stavelot, nestles in the heart of an artificially created medieval meander of the Amblève. This unique topography, between forest and river, makes it the ideal starting point for a memorable kayaking descent.
A class II-III river
The Amblève is rated class II to III on the international rapids scale, making it the most sporty Ardennes river accessible to the general public. Unlike the Semois (class I) or the Lesse (class I-II), it requires sustained attention on the rapid sections.
Its bed, carved into limestone gorges, creates exciting technical passages alternating with calm pools where the water reflects the beech forests. The SPW DGH/6621 station monitors its flow rate in real time.
The Red Kite
An emblematic species of the Liège Ardennes, this graceful raptor with its forked tail regularly soars above the Amblève gorges. A privileged sighting from a silent kayak.
The Brown Trout
The fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters of the Amblève are home to exceptional populations of brown trout. Water quality is a marker of the good ecological health of this Natura 2000 section.
Natura 2000
The Amblève valley is entirely classified as a Natura 2000 zone (BE33007). It protects priority habitats: Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests, ranunculus rivers and poor meadows.
