Understanding the Semois flow

The water level of the Semois is regulated by the Walloon Region to protect biodiversity (Natura 2000). Here are the navigability rules:

The Kayaking Seasons

Spring (April-June)

This is the prime season for lovers of green landscapes and generous flows. Nature awakens, birds sing and the water is lively.

Summer (July-August)

The favourite period for family kayaking in the Ardennes. The water is shallower, warmer, and allows many swimming breaks all along the route.

Autumn (September-October)

Paddling beneath the blazing colours of the Ardennes is an unforgettable experience. Calm returns to the river for a complete disconnection.

When to go kayaking on the Semois — frequently asked questions

Is the Semois navigable today?

Navigation is allowed if the flow is between 2.2 m³/s and 50 m³/s. Check our live gauge on this page.

What is the best time to go kayaking in the Ardennes?

Spring (April-June) is ideal for dynamic flows. Summer is perfect for families thanks to calm, mild water.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop kayaking! It is even a mystical experience in the forest. In the event of dangerous flooding, we cancel and refund in full.

What is the best month to kayak on the Semois?

May and June offer the best compromise: a still-dynamic flow, long days and lush nature. September is also very pleasant, quieter and less crowded.

Can you kayak on the Semois in summer despite the low water?

Yes, in July and August the Semois usually remains navigable: the water is calm and mild, ideal for families. During marked drought, check the live water level before booking.

Are there periods to avoid?

Avoid winter flood episodes and heavy rain (flow above 50 m³/s: navigation suspended) as well as severe droughts (flow too low). Our live gauge indicates whether navigation is allowed that same day.

What time of day is best to set off?

The morning offers calmer water, soft light and more wildlife; early afternoon remains ideal in summer. Avoid setting off too late so you can finish the descent before dusk.
