Kayaking on the Semois with Children
Safety, fun, and unforgettable memories: everything you need to know for a successful family outing.
The Semois, the safest river in Belgium for children
Kayaking with your kids? Yes, from 3 years old — provided you choose the right river. The Semois has everything needed to turn your children's first kayaking trip into a wonderful childhood memory.
Every summer, over 1,200 families embark from Alle-sur-Semois with children aged 3 to 14. The reason? A unique mix in Belgium: shallow water (40 to 80 cm on average), a steady current with no rapids, pebble beaches for hourly picnics, and visible wildlife (herons, dragonflies, fish under the kayak).
This page gathers everything a parent needs to know before booking: actual minimum age, adapted equipment, a typical day's schedule, mistakes to avoid, and our flagship family route, tested and approved through 30 years of operation.
Family kayaking: An obvious choice on the Semois
Unlike other, more turbulent rivers, the Semois is the ultimate family destination in Belgium.
Why? Because its current is peaceful and, above all, its depth is very low on most of the routes (often between 40 and 80 cm). This is what makes it a reassuring river for parents, even with young children.
💡 Did you know?
We have 3-seater canoes that allow a child to be placed in the middle, perfectly safe between their two parents.

Safety, our absolute priority
Certified life jackets
We provide life jackets suitable for all body types, from the smallest (XS) to the largest.
Weather & Flow
We monitor water levels in real-time. If the river poses any risk whatsoever, navigation is suspended.
Specific Briefing
Our instructors explain to children how to get into the kayak and what to do if you want to stop.
Why the Semois rather than another river?
Not all rivers in the Ardennes are equally suitable for families. Here are the criteria that make the difference.
Shallow depth
40 to 80 cm over 80% of the route. In the event of a fall, the child can touch the bottom immediately.
Gentle current
No rapids, no technical dams on the route. The current carries you smoothly without rushing.
Natural beaches
A pebble beach every 15-20 minutes to take a break, have a picnic, or go for a swim.
3-seater canoes
The child is safely in the middle, surrounded by their two parents. No single-seaters for the little ones.

5 mistakes to avoid with your family
Choosing a route that is too long
With kids under 8, never go beyond 7 km. After that, attention drops, legs go numb, and the outing turns into a nightmare.
Forgetting a full change of clothes
A wet child having to wait an hour in a shuttle is a guaranteed recipe for tears. Bring a complete set of clothes for each child.
Underestimating sunscreen
Water reflects 80% of UV rays. Within an hour without sunscreen, your child will get a sunburn, even on an overcast day.
Going mid-afternoon in peak summer
Between 2 PM and 4 PM in July-August, the Semois is crowded. Leave at 10 AM: it's less hot and you'll have the river almost to yourselves.
Not using the toilet beforehand
Getting out of the kayak, landing, and getting back in takes 10 minutes and is tiring. Toilet breaks are mandatory right before embarkation.
« We hesitated for 3 years before taking our kids kayaking. Aïna was 4, Léon was 7. The Alle-Vresse route was perfect: shallow water, a swimming break halfway... Aïna slept for half the descent. Léon won't stop asking when we're going back. It has become our annual family ritual. »
