Kayak Semois Ardennes — Kayaking on the Semois River

At Kayak-ardenne, the minimum age varies by route. For short routes (7-10 km), children can participate accompanied by an adult, often in a family kayak. For longer routes (11-17 km), the recommended minimum age is 12 years unaccompanied.

It is not strictly required but highly recommended. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory and provided free of charge by Kayak-ardenne. The Semois is a calm river, but being comfortable in water adds extra security.

Bring weather-appropriate clothing (swimwear, quick-dry clothes), closed shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen and a waterproof bag. We provide the kayak, paddle, life jacket and a waterproof bucket.

Online booking is strongly recommended. We sometimes have to turn away up to 200 people per day due to lack of availability. Book 3 to 5 days in advance (15 days for groups).

The price at Kayak-Ardenne includes: the kayak (solo, tandem or family), paddle, life jacket, a waterproof bucket, a safety briefing and minibus transport to and from the start/end point.

Our base in Alle-sur-Semois (Rue de la semois, 5550 Alle-sur-Semois) is both your start and end point. For one-way routes, we transport you free of charge by minibus to the starting point.

Duration depends on the chosen route. Expect about 1.5 to 2 hours for short routes (7-10 km) and 3 to 4 hours for longer routes (11-17 km).

Yes, absolutely! The Semois is very calm, without strong currents, ideal for a first kayaking experience. We offer routes specially designed for beginners and families, such as Alle → Vresse. A safety briefing is given to all participants before departure.

The Alle → Vresse (7 km, 90–120 min) route is ideal for a first family kayak outing. Laminar flow, low gradient, accessible from age 3 accompanied by an adult. You will pass under the famous Wicker Bridge of Laforet.

The Semois is a Natura 2000 biodiversity sanctuary. You may spot Kingfishers, Grey Herons, European beavers, wild trout, grayling and, with a lot of luck and silence, the majestic Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) — absolutely forbidden to approach.

Yes, calm, water-accustomed dogs are accepted on short routes (7-10 km), kept on a lead at boarding. We recommend a dog life jacket (not provided).

Yes, rain does not interrupt navigation as long as the flow rate remains within safe thresholds. In the event of a storm, sudden flood or flow rate above 40 m³/s, outings are suspended and you will be fully refunded or rescheduled at no charge.

The kayaking season runs from April to October. May-June offers the spectacular water buttercup blooms. July-August is ideal for swimming (~22°C water). September-October offers flaming Ardennes autumn colours and fewer crowds.

A free car park is available at our base in Alle-sur-Semois (Rue Liboichant). Parking is secured for the entire duration of your descent. Arrive 15-30 minutes before your time slot for the safety briefing.
