Kayaking in Bouillon Semois Descent in the Heart of the Ardennes

Embark on an unforgettable adventure on the Semois departing from Bouillon, the Pearl of the Ardennes. Family or sporty routes, preserved landscapes, and a medieval castle as a backdrop.

Why Choose Bouillon for Your Kayak Descent?

Nestled in a spectacular meander of the Semois, the medieval town of Bouillon is the ideal starting point to discover the most beautiful river in the Belgian Ardennes by kayak.

Bouillon occupies an exceptional geographical position on the Semois. Dominated by the oldest castle in Belgium, the town offers a unique setting where medieval heritage and wild nature meet. The river carves deep meanders here, nestled between wooded hills that protect from the wind and create a microclimate favorable for kayaking.

For over 30 years, Semois Kayak has offered descents departing from the Bouillon region. Our routes cross landscapes classified as the Major Heritage of Wallonia: forests of century-old oaks and beeches, shale cliffs, and alluvial meadows where wildlife (grey herons, kingfishers, otters) can be observed from the water.

The kayak descent from Bouillon is suitable for families with children from 6 years old as well as for experienced paddlers looking for a longer and more technical route. The Semois at Bouillon : an Exceptional River

The Semois is one of the rare European rivers that flows through a National Park while remaining navigable by kayak for over 60 kilometres. At Bouillon, it reaches its full hydrological maturity, offering a unique setting where medieval heritage and wild nature combine.

A landscape shaped over 350 million years

The schisto-sandstone Ardennes substrate that forms the banks of the Semois at Bouillon dates from the Primary Era. These resistant rocks explain why the river did not carve a vertical canyon, but instead wound around obstacles, creating the spectacular meanders that have made the Giant's Tomb and Frahan world-famous.

Between Bouillon and Bohan, the Semois drops from 134 to 95 metres above sea level — a 39 m drop over 40 km that explains its calm and regular character, ideal for leisure kayaking. The average flow at Membre is 15 m³/s, with seasonal variations from 3 m³/s (summer low water) to over 80 m³/s during winter floods.

The valley is listed as Major Heritage of Wallonia and integrated into the Semois-Attert Natural Park. No fewer than 12 Natura 2000 zones follow one another between Bouillon and Vresse, sheltering emblematic species such as the European otter (Lutra lutra), the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), and the rare black stork (Ciconia nigra).

Bouillon and the Semois : 1,000 years of shared history

Bouillon Castle was built on a rocky promontory encircled by a meander of the Semois — the river formed a virtually impregnable natural defence. Godfrey of Bouillon sold the fortress to the Bishopric of Liège in 1096 to finance the First Crusade. This same river witnessed centuries of tanners, millers, and log drivers before tourism replaced industry in the 20th century.

Kayaking on the Semois began in the 1960s, driven by the first sports clubs in Bouillon. Today, more than 80,000 kayakers per season descend the Semois, making it one of the 5 most frequented waterways in Belgium for nautical tourism.

Our base Kayak Semois Ardenne is part of this tradition with over 30 years of expertise on Ardennes rivers. Our guides know every meander, every rapid, and every secret beach between Bouillon and Bohan. The full descent of the Semois ranks among the most memorable experiences you can have in the Belgian Ardennes.

Preparing Your Descent — Expert Tips

Before heading out on the Semois from Bouillon, here are our guides' recommendations for a safe and memorable kayak descent, whether you are a beginner or an experienced paddler.

🌡️ Choosing the right moment

Always check the water level before setting out (widget above). Navigation forbidden above 0.90 m at the Membre gauging station. May and September offer the best conditions: clear water, manageable crowds, and ideal temperatures between 18°C and 24°C.

👔 What to wear

In July-August: shorts + t-shirt + water shoes. In May, June and September: a thermal base layer is recommended — the temperature of the Semois at Bouillon ranges between 12°C and 19°C depending on the season. Always wear the life jacket provided.

📸 Protecting your belongings

Bring a waterproof dry bag or waterproof pouch for your phone. Capsizing is rare on the Semois but does happen at the rapids. Our GPS app lets you track your position in real time.

🏕️ Stops and breaks

On the Bouillon → Bohan route, note the natural beaches at Cordemois (km 5), Alle-sur-Semois (km 14) and Membre (km 18). The Alle beach has a supermarket and public toilets.

🦦 Respecting wildlife

In the National Park, the otter, kingfisher and black stork are strictly protected. Paddle quietly along wooded banks, avoid shouting, and do not land in reed beds. These habitats are irreplaceable.

⚡ In an emergency

If you capsize: hold on to your kayak (it floats), feet first, drift to the bank. Call 112 or our direct line +32 476 806 869. GPS position can be shared via the KSA app.
