What is the best time to kayak on the Semois?
The ideal season for kayaking on the Semois extends from April to October. The months of June, July and August offer the most pleasant conditions with warmer temperatures and optimal water flow.
Should I book in advance for kayaking?
Yes, especially in high season (June-August) and on weekends. We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance to guarantee your place. You can book online via our secure platform.
Is electric MTB accessible to beginners?
Absolutely! Our electric MTBs are perfect for beginners. The electric assistance allows you to travel the Ardennes trails without excessive effort. We also offer routes adapted to all levels.
Is the campsite open all year round?
Our campsite is open from April 1st to October 31st. During this period, our facilities are fully available, including sanitary facilities, electricity and Wi-Fi access.
Where is kayaking allowed?
In Belgium, kayaking is allowed on navigable waterways and those not prohibited by local decree.
In Wallonia, authorized rivers include the Semois, Ourthe, Lesse, Meuse, Lys, etc.
Protected zones (nature reserves, Natura 2000 areas) may be prohibited. Always check the official SPW map before leaving.
Which muscles does kayaking work?
Kayaking mainly uses:
- The dorsals and trapezius (back)
- The shoulders and arms (biceps, triceps)
- The abdominals and obliques (core)
- The lower back (stability)
It is a complete sport, with low joint impact, excellent for posture and endurance.
Where can I kayak freely in Belgium?
You can navigate freely (without rental) on:
- The Semois (very popular)
- The Ourthe (between Durbuy and Esneux)
- The Lesse (with authorization in high season)
- The Meuse (non-commercial sections)
- The Deûle (authorized sections)
Attention: equipment must be approved, and a life jacket is mandatory. Check water levels and local bans.
What is the average weight of a kayak?
Weight depends on the type:
- Recreational solo kayak (plastic): 12 to 20 kg
- Tandem kayak: 20 to 30 kg
- Inflatable kayak: 10 to 18 kg
Polyethylene models are heavier but more durable. Lightweight models (composites) are reserved for competitors.
Where can you swim in the Semois?
Swimming is prohibited in most sections to protect flora and fauna.
However, some municipalities authorize swimming in specific places:
- At Vresse-sur-Semois (supervised beach in summer)
- At Chiny (designated area near the campsite)
Always check information signs on site or contact the local tourist office.
Which fish in the Semois?
The Semois is home to a rich aquatic fauna, including:
- Brown trout (emblematic species)
- Grayling
- Pike
- Perch
- Minnow and other small bottom fish
The river is classified as a "first category watercourse" for trout fishing.
What are the health benefits of kayaking?
Kayaking offers many benefits:
- Strengthens the upper body (back, arms, shoulders)
- Improves cardiovascular endurance
- Reduces stress (immersion in nature)
- Low impact on joints
- Develops coordination and balance
It is an accessible, complete and therapeutic sport.
Which kayak is the most stable?
The most stable kayaks are flat-bottom recreational kayaks with a width greater than 75 cm.
Popular examples:
- Perception Tribe
- Old Town Loon
- Intex Explorer K2 (inflatable)
They are perfect for beginners, fishing or trips on calm rivers like the Semois.
Is a life jacket mandatory for kayaking?
Yes, absolutely. In Belgium, wearing an approved life jacket (class III or V) is mandatory for everyone on board a kayak, canoe or light craft.
This obligation is written in the Royal Decree of May 15, 1996 relating to recreational boating.
Rental companies provide it systematically.
Which muscles does kayaking work?
Kayaking engages many muscle groups:
- Back: dorsals, trapezius, lumbar
- Arms: biceps, triceps, forearms
- Shoulders: deltoids
- Torso: abdominals, obliques (rotation)
Each paddle stroke engages a complete muscle chain, making it an excellent functional exercise.
Is it difficult to kayak for a beginner?
No, not at all. Kayaking on a calm river like the Semois is very accessible to beginners.
A 10 to 15 minute initiation is enough to learn:
- How to hold the paddle
- How to turn and slow down
- Basic safety rules
Thousands of families, children and seniors practice every summer without difficulty.
Do I need a permit to kayak?
No. In Belgium, no permit is required to practice recreational kayaking on authorized rivers.
You just need to respect:
- Wearing a life jacket
- Local prohibitions
- Navigation rules (priority, speed, etc.)
Rental companies verify age and swimming ability, but no permit.
Is it possible to kayak on the Deûle?
Yes, but only on certain authorized sections, mainly in Flanders and Northern France.
In Belgium, the Deûle is canalized and shared with commercial navigation. Check with:
- VNF (Voies Navigables de France)
- Local clubs (e.g., at Courrières or Deûlémont)
Kayaking is less common there than in the Ardennes, but possible with caution.
What is the speed of a sea kayak?
The average speed of a sea kayak depends on several factors (shape, weight, conditions):
- Cruising speed: 4 to 6 km/h
- Maximum speed (sustained effort): 7 to 8 km/h
- Records (competition): up to 10 km/h
An experienced kayaker covers about 20 to 30 km per day at sea.
What is the weight limit for a kayak?
The maximum load (paddler + equipment) is set by the manufacturer:
- Single recreational kayak (e.g. Itiwit X100): 100 kg
- Rigid sea kayak (e.g. P&H Scorpio): 150 kg
- Double kayak (e.g. Perception Rambler 13.5 T): 227 kg
⚠️ Exceeding this limit reduces buoyancy, stability and increases the risk of capsizing.

Where to swim outdoors in Belgium?
Swimming in rivers is highly regulated in Belgium. In 2025, only supervised beaches in Wallonia are authorized, such as at Han-sur-Lesse, Rochefort or Vresse-sur-Semois.
For a combined day of kayak + nature swimming, consult the safe itineraries on kayaksemois-ardenne.be.

Forbidden beaches have a red sign or official SPW signage. Water quality is tested weekly in summer: results are published on
In case of doubt, ask your kayak rental company. At kayaksemois-ardenne.be, we guide you to authorized and safe areas.
Is it possible to swim in a river?
Yes, but only in officially authorized areas. In Wallonia, swimming is prohibited by default unless otherwise stated.
