Ardennes Kayak: Best Routes & Tips
The Belgian Ardennes, a land of water and legends. Find your next river adventure.
The Ardennes, a kayaker's paradise for over a century
Three great rivers, a thousand atmospheres. Kayaking in the Ardennes means choosing between the wild Semois, the touristy Lesse, and the green Ourthe — each with its own personality.
The Ardennes massif is one of the oldest in Europe: its impermeable shale rocks date back to the Devonian period, over 380 million years ago. It is this unique geology that today sculpts spectacular meanders, steep cliffs, and millennia-old beech forests that you cross while paddling. Each river tells a different story — the Semois, classified as a National Park in 2022, is home to the most preserved nature in Wallonia; the Lesse, crossed by kayaks since 1898, keeps the soul of historical Belgian tourism; the Ourthe, queen of the northern Ardennes, seduces with its stone villages like La Roche.
With over 15 years of experience and more than 50,000 guided descents, we accompany families, sports enthusiasts, and contemplatives in choosing the river that suits them. This guide is the result of these years spent on the water.

The Ardennes, sculpted by water and time
Understanding the Ardennes geography means understanding why kayaking here is so special.
A unique geology
The impermeable Ardennes shale prevents water from infiltrating. Result: rivers with sustained flows and rocky bottoms that make the water particularly clear — you can see your feet in a kayak.
A living heritage
Bouillon, La Roche, Dinant: medieval castles punctuate your descents. The Semois passes at the foot of the castle of Godfrey of Bouillon (11th century), first crusade on your right, kayak between your legs.
A Natura 2000 biodiversity
Grey herons, kingfishers, beavers, otters: Ardennes wildlife has recolonized the rivers over the last 30 years. On the Semois, 1 in 3 descents crosses a heron and some lucky kayakers observe black storks.
Semois, Lesse, or Ourthe?
| Characteristic | The Semois | The Lesse | The Ourthe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Wild & calm | Lively & touristy | Green & calm |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate | Moderate (dams) | Easy |
| Crowds | Moderate | Very high | High |
| Landscapes | Ardennes forests & meanders | Cliffs & castles | Valleys & villages |
| Verdict | For untouched nature and disconnection | For the tourist atmosphere between Houyet and Dinant | For an easy descent in the Northern Ardennes |
Our verdict: If you are looking for disconnection and untouched nature, the Semois is the undeniable choice.
Which river based on who you are?
Beyond the comparison table, here is our honest recommendation based on your main expectation.
The enduring adventurer
You are looking for a physical challenge over a full day, swallowing kilometers, and a real feeling of effort.
7h+ of paddling, wild meanders, crossing the national park. The reference for experienced kayakers.
The family with children
You want safety, shallow water, gentle current, and the possibility of a swimming break.
Water at 40–80 cm, natural beaches, duration 2h. The #1 choice for families for 30 years.
The tourist-photographer
You want castles, cliffs, a "postcard" atmosphere, and lively villages upon arrival.
Limestone cliffs, castles, arrival in Dinant. But be prepared: very crowded in summer.
10 years of observation summarized in 6 tips
Our instructors see 10,000 kayakers pass by every year. Here is what they tirelessly repeat.
- Choose the river according to the day's flow, not according to yesterday's plan. A Semois at 5 m³/s is peaceful; at 30 m³/s it becomes sporty. Check our flow pages before leaving.
- Avoid Ascension weekend and August 15th. Three Ardennes rivers saturated on the same day = a 6-hour traffic jam. Prefer the day before or the day after.
- Take the first morning shuttle. You will have the river to yourself, the light is superb, and you will see more wildlife (herons, ducks, sometimes otters).
- Do not underestimate end-of-day fatigue. 17 km in a kayak is easy for the first 5 — the 15th km requires concentration. Eat and hydrate early.
- Respect Natura 2000 areas. You are crossing ecological sanctuaries. No wild camping, no fires, no amplified music. The nature of the Ardennes is our shared heritage.
- Opt for a two-seater as a beginner. More stable than a single-seater, it allows a beginner to learn from someone experienced. The transition to a single-seater will come naturally on the 2nd or 3rd outing.

Three descents, three atmospheres
« We compared Semois and Lesse, we came back to the Semois 3 times this year. The nature is incomparable, we only came across 4 kayaks in 4 hours. »
« The Bouillon → Alle descent is an expedition. 27 km, 7 hours on the water, a picnic on the banks of the Semois — we're still talking about it two years later. »
« First kayak at 55. We chose the 7 km, we doubled the duration because we stopped so much. The Semois is much calmer than we imagined. »
The Ardennes awaits you.
