A Unique Identity
Nestled in a tight meander of the river, just a stone's throw from the French border, Bohan-sur-Semois is a fascinating case study.
Often simply called Bohan, this locality stands out for its marked geographic and cultural insularity. Far from major urban centers, the village has developed a singular identity over the centuries, shaped by an economy of resilience, from nail-making to tobacco and smuggling.

Geographical and Environmental Setting
🏞️ The Imprint of the Semois
The village developed at an average altitude of 167 meters, in a deep valley typical of the Ardennes massif. The geological substrate (shale and quartzite) has been deeply incised by the Semois, creating a landscape of spectacular meanders.
This specific microclimate (south-facing slopes, morning mists) became the key to tobacco's success in the 19th century, favoring natural drying and fermentation.
Bohan-Membre Nature Reserve
The region's isolation has allowed for the preservation of exceptional forest ecosystems over 177 hectares. The slope forest (oaks, hornbeams) and rocky outcrops harbor remarkable biodiversity.
👀 Natural Sites and Panoramas
The Cross of Bohan (La Croix)
310m
Dominating the village from its full height, it offers a striking panorama of the meander. The ascent (140m elevation gain) is both a physical and visual pilgrimage.
The Fairies' Table (La Table des Fées)
LegendLocated in the reserve, this site includes notable geological formations like the "Chimney," toponymic markers anchored in local imagination (Nutons/Gnomes).
The Industrial Era: Iron and Tobacco
Bohan's economy never relied solely on subsistence farming. Poor soil pushed inhabitants towards specialized craftsmanship: first iron, then "brown gold."
The Clauteûs (Nail Makers)
Until the dawn of the 20th century, Bohan was a renowned center for hand nail-making. Men forged in small "shops" in the evenings. This industry declined in the face of industrial mechanical nail-making.
🍂 The Epic of Semois Tobacco
Launched in 1855 by Joseph Pierret, tobacco cultivation exploded in Bohan, reaching 575 hectares and 12 million plants in 1951. "Semois Tobacco" is both a landscape (drying sheds) and a savoir-faire.
Living Heritage
Today, the Maison Martin (founded in 1886) is the last factory to ensure the complete cycle, from seed to pipe. In 2025, this culture was inscribed as intangible heritage of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Border, War, and Smuggling
🛂 The Sociology of "Smuggling"
The border position spawned a parallel economy: smuggling. Tobacco and coffee towards France, alcohol and livestock towards Belgium.
The "fraudsters" used trained dogs and knew the forest by heart. The Bois-Jean stream served as a natural border. The hamlet of Hérisson preserves the memory of this era with its famous "Smugglers' Road" (Rue des Contrebandiers).
🧨 The Trauma of the Broken Bridge
A Symbol of Rupture
This majestic viaduct supported the vicinal tramway line (SNCV) connecting Gedinne to Bohan.
- 1944: Dynamited during the German retreat (or by the resistance).
- Consequence: Never rebuilt, marking the end of the vicinal line.
- Today: Its interrupted arches are an involuntary architectural "folly," the symbol of the village.

Built Heritage and Legends
Saint-Léger Church (1760)
Houses remarkable furniture. Anecdote: in the 19th century, the municipal council met in the bell tower, a source of epic conflicts over the tower keys!
The Marichaux House
Henri de la Lindi Square. Exceptional witness to 18th-century rural half-timbered architecture. Recently restored.
The Stone to Marry (Pierre à Marier)
Ethnographic monument linked to ancient fertility rites, rediscovered and unearthed in 1966.
The Legend of the Bear
In 1760, an escaped Carpathian bear allegedly got drunk on beer during the church inauguration, allowing its capture. A legend celebrated today by the local beer "L'Ours de Bohan" (The Bear of Bohan).
