Herbeumont | Complete Guide – Castle, Nature & Kayaking in the Belgian Ardennes

Herbeumont: Between Semois and History

The municipality of Herbeumont, nestled in the province of Luxembourg in Belgium, represents a geographical and historical entity of remarkable complexity. Its identity was forged to the rhythm of the Semois meanders and the upheavals of European history.

The main village occupies an almost insular position, bounded on three sides by the loops of the river. This configuration not only determined its medieval defensive potential, but also conditions its current landscape attractiveness and recreational opportunities.

"Herbeumont embodies the archetype of the resilient Ardennes village, capable of transforming its 'harsh heights' into a haven of peace and dynamism."

Historical Evolution of Herbeumont

From an impregnable medieval fortress to a resilient Ardennes village, the history of Herbeumont is the story of a strategic position transformed into a cultural destination.

1268

Foundation of the fortress

Jehan de Rochefort (House of Walcourt) erected the fortress on an artificially leveled rocky hillock. Construction of the square keep, the entrance gatehouse and the ditch cut into the rock to a depth of 18 meters.

15th – 16th century

Adaptation to artillery

Herbeumont became a crucial "buffer lordship" between the Kingdom of France and the Germanic Empire. The ramparts were reinforced with cannon platforms, the Bourgeois Tower and the Malcouverte Tower.

August 21, 1657

Siege and destruction

Marshal de la Ferté, on behalf of Louis XIV, besieged and destroyed the fortress after the capture of Montmédy. Symbol of the end of local feudalism and French centralization.

May 10, 1940

World War II

Troops of the 10th Panzer Division crossed the region. Herbeumont fell on May 12. The destruction led to massive reconstruction after 1945.

Since 1970

Tourist Renaissance

Progressive restoration of the castle, development of kayaking and trail running, integration into the Semois Valley National Park. Herbeumont positions itself as a nature and heritage destination.

Magnificent canoe descent (17km), the service is very good, we wait little even at arrival thanks to the driver and his wife who willingly answer our questions and calls. In addition, the small cafe with terrace is very pleasant. The night at the campsite was perfect.
